Project
Students were asked to create two poster designs based on a song, one to create a logo type and then a second to use type and image. I utilize bright colors and swirly, retro fonts to capture the flirty pop vibe of one of my favorite songs, "Hot Crush Lover" by Blu de Tiger. Using the post modern grid to follow the organic curves of my font, I created two nostalgic, fun designs that honor both the artist and my own associations with the song.
Research
I wanted to use a retro, bold, graphic style and I was inspired both by bold 70s and 80s designs, as well as the art movement, Art Nouveau. I examined both styles for an idea of key elements that I could use in my design. I also studied the artist's personal style and album covers to stay true to her aesthetic.
Process
For my process, I examined color pallets, found fonts, and sketched ideas for the art nouveau portrait of Blu. Below are some color options from inspiration pictures and the illustration process from traditional sketchbook, to procreate outline, to final colored figure.
Result
For the final application, I created two broadside posters. One is majority text and follows a postmodern grid system with a large quote from the song. The other is image based and features text in and around the illustration. Overall, they complement each other when displayed together.
